23/11/01 The Victor
Harbor CFS is asked to conduct a controlled burn of felled pine trees along
the foreshore within the township of Victor Harbor, near the mouth of the
Hindmarsh River, to aid in the re-establishment of native species.
23/11/01 To add to the complexity of the burn, the only access to the
area was along the railway line used by Steam Ranger. Hoses were also required
to be run down the hill from the street above, to enable control of the fire
by appliances positioned along the railway line.
23/11/01 The piles
of dry felled trees lay beneath standing trees which needed to be protected
by the firefighters. During the height of the fire flames leapt up into the
branches of the standing trees and were quickly extinguished by crews providing
protection on the top slope positioned in front of houses.
23/11/01 These are
some of the CFS volunteers who carried out the controlled burn, seen here
enjoying a break upon the completion of their work. These volunteers giving
up a day of paid work to provide a service to our community.
